Most nursery manager job descriptions are copied from a template written a decade ago. They list "oversee daily operations" and omit the four things that actually determine whether the person succeeds. Here is a description grounded in what the role really involves.

Purpose of the role

To lead the setting's practice, people and compliance so that every child receives high-quality early education and care, the team is supported and developing, and the setting meets its statutory duties under the EYFS and remains financially sustainable.

Qualifications and checks

  • Level 3 or above in Early Years Education and Childcare, full and relevant (Level 5 or a degree desirable)
  • Designated Safeguarding Lead training, current
  • Paediatric first aid certificate, current
  • Enhanced DBS with children's barred list check
  • Satisfactory references and full employment history

Core responsibilities

**Safeguarding and welfare**

  • Act as Designated Safeguarding Lead, or line-manage the DSL where separately designated
  • Maintain the Single Central Record and safer recruitment procedures
  • Ensure all staff complete safeguarding training and understand referral routes
  • Manage allegations against staff, including LADO liaison

**Quality of education**

  • Lead curriculum design across the seven areas of learning
  • Monitor the quality of teaching through learning walks, observation and moderation
  • Ensure the progress check at two and ongoing assessment inform planning
  • Oversee provision for children with SEND alongside the SENCO

**People**

  • Recruit, induct and retain a qualified, stable team
  • Deliver regular supervision and annual appraisal for every staff member
  • Build and maintain the CPD plan
  • Manage rotas, ratios, cover and absence

**Compliance and premises**

  • Maintain all statutory policies and review dates
  • Manage health and safety, risk assessments, fire procedures and food hygiene
  • Maintain accurate registers, records and Ofsted notifications

**Business**

  • Manage occupancy, admissions and the waiting list
  • Oversee funded entitlement claims and parent invoicing
  • Work within the agreed budget and report on performance

**Partnership**

  • Build relationships with parents and carers, including complaint resolution
  • Liaise with health visitors, local authority advisers, schools and external professionals

Person specification: what actually predicts success

The four qualities that distinguish managers who thrive:

  1. **Calm under an unplanned day.** Two staff off, a distressed parent at the door, and an inspection call — the ability to sequence rather than spiral.
  2. **Willingness to have the difficult conversation early.** The single strongest predictor of team stability.
  3. **Curiosity about pedagogy.** Managers who are still interested in how children learn keep good practitioners.
  4. **Comfort with numbers.** Occupancy, ratios, funding and budgets are half the job.

What to leave out

Drop "other duties as required" — it tells a candidate nothing and reads as a warning. Drop unexplained jargon. And be honest about hours: if the role includes evening paperwork and Saturday open days, say so. Every hire that fails in the first three months failed because the description was not honest.

Setting it up for success

The description is only half of it. New managers succeed when they get a genuine handover, named support from the owner or trustee board in the first term, and protected non-contact time written into the contract rather than assumed.
